Join the Student Senate for California Community Colleges for a webinar exploring
many of the barriers undocumented students encounter—from financial aid limitations
and legal vulnerabilities to mental health struggles—and examine how colleges, faculty,
and peers can take concrete steps to support and uplift these students. As undocumented
students navigate the complexities of college life, they also confront uncertainties
tied to national immigration policies and the upcoming presidential election. Whether
you're an educator, administrator, or student, this session will empower you to become
a better ally to undocumented students and ensure they have the support to thrive
in college.

This module provides an overview of who undocumented students are in the California
Community Colleges, as well as promising practices for supporting them. In addition
to covering the protection of student information and how undocumented students can
pay for college, it includes a robust set of resources for undocumented students and
allies.

Join us in celebrating our Dreamers with an inspiring keynote by Dr. Juan Carlos Reyna,
food, music, and networking. Together, let’s build a strong ecosystem for our students
that breaks down silos and promotes a collaborative campus approach to the success
of our undocumented/mixed status students.
De Aquí y De Allá:
All students possess multiple salient identities, and oftentimes, it can be difficult
to navigate society, especially when these identities intersect. Dr. Reyna will provide
a space that will allow for participants to reflect on their own identities. Dr. Reyna
will share his personal story as it related to growing up undocumented and not feeling
like he fully belonged in the United States, nor did he feel like he belonged in Mexico,
where he was born. After many years of self-reflection and development, he's undergone
a paradigm shift and now sees himself belonging in both the U.S. and Mexico, regardless
of the rhetoric related to undocumented individuals. This self-development journey
will resonate with students navigating higher education struggling with their complex and
intersecting identities and sense of belonging.
Dr. Reyna's Bio:
Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Dr. Juan Carlos Reyna is a passionate educational leader who seeks to be of positive influence in the lives of others. He grew up undocumented in San Diego North County, and for many years, felt like he would never be able to leave the area with the coast to the West, Checkpoints to the North and East, and the U.S./Mexico border to the South. He grew up in a low-income household with multiple families and navigated dangerous communities. He has since navigated systems of higher education and has earned a Bachelor's Degree in History from the California State University of San Marcos (CSUSM), a Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration from National University (NU) and a Doctor of Education in Community College Leadership from San Diego State University (SDSU). He has also served in various leadership capacities in higher education and in non-profit organizations, including Vice President of Finance, Dean, and Associate Dean. He is currently a Faculty member at CSUSM and the Executive Director of Streets 2 Degrees Educational Services. His passion for education comes from the opportunity to work directly with students and families to help them navigate systems of higher education to achieve social and economic ability.

This session will provide a comprehensive overview of financial aid for undocumented students in California, highlighting recent updates and ongoing challenges. We will cover the latest changes to the CA Dream Act Application (CADAA), eligibility criteria, and financial aid policies, using data from the California Student Aid Commission’s "Renewing the Dream" report. Additionally, we will discuss the DREAM Act Service Incentive Grant (DSIG), which supports undocumented students through community service, focusing on eligibility, application processes, and the role of cross-departmental collaboration. Attendees will learn best practices for improving financial aid access and maximizing the DSIG program’s impact, fostering a collaborative approach to support undocumented students' success.
